PayPal all the way - travel the Arctic Circle without your wallet
Imagine travelling to the Arctic Circle to photograph the Northern Lights. Sounds like the trip of a lifetime, right? But now imagine you’re not allowed to use any cash or cards to get there – and it’s 2,000 miles away.
That was the cold reality (pun intended) facing comedian
Joel Dommett when UniLad challenged him to travel from the UK to the Arctic Circle armed only with his phone and his
PayPal account. Or as Joel himself put it: “One quiet afternoon I took a turn and was mugged by PayPal, who took my wallet!”
There were rules too. Everything had to be booked and paid for with PayPal and he had to use at least eight different modes of transport along the way. You can watch the best bits from his epic journey
here.
Fortunately for Joel, arranging his trip wasn’t as taxing as he first feared. In fact, from sorting out flights and hotels, to booking experiences like an Arctic helicopter ride, it was easy to keep his trip moving with the tap of a finger on his PayPal account. He even managed to sign up for a dog sled ride while bouncing over the snow on a skidoo!
Joel could also keep tabs on exactly what he was spending with real-time updates via PayPal app notifications or email, and because he’d linked all his credit and debit cards to his PayPal wallet, he could switch between debit or credit card depending on the item or journey he was buying. Plus, he could still accrue all his reward points on the cards he used.
And the best bit (aside from the helicopter ride and sleeping in an igloo) every pound, krona or anything else he forked out was fully covered by
PayPal Buyer Protection.
Just like anyone who buys something or books a trip using PayPal, Joel knew his payments were secure as he didn’t have to share his card or bank account details with anyone, meaning he had the confidence to book with brands and companies he wasn’t necessarily familiar with. He also knew, that if something he booked or ordered wasn’t as described or didn’t turn up, then PayPal could help him get his money back.
