Small Business Spotlight: Sensory Smart Store
“It’s really hard to imagine not being able to put a sock on a child” explains Mel Thomsett, but this was the challenge that inspired her to start her business.
After her son was diagnosed with autism and sensory processing disorder, Mel was finding it impossible to give him the care he needed while not letting her employer down. Then, Mel ordered seamless socks for her son on eBay from the US and after he successfully tried them on, she realised that there might be other parents going through this.
She began bulk buying for the UK market and created a community of parents and children experiencing similar challenges. She set up her
Sensory Smart Store, dedicated to providing products for people with sensory or sensitivity issues, often in the form of seamless or seam-free clothing.
In one of our latest videos, Mel explains how she runs a growing business from home as well as recent challenges her business faced, brought on by the EU referendum. With a cash advance from PayPal Working Capital, Mel has been able to grow her business strategically, first by moving the business into a new space, her “shedquarters”, and also by funding additional product lines.
