Small Business Spotlight: ASH Ironworks
Devon based ASH Ironworks was established by master blacksmith Andrew Hall in 1986. The business creates high-quality, decorative ironwork, such as sculptures, lighting and wall art. They also offer their customers the opportunity to design their own items, including most recently an iron gate displaying a family crest.

Established nearly thirty years ago, Andrew now employs two forges and has three blacksmiths working for him. We caught up with him on growing a successful business that stands the test of time…

PayPal: What has been your greatest success?

Andrew Hall: One of the things I am most proud of is how long we’ve been around. I started the business back in the 80s, and we’re still going strong today. I believe the quality of my work had got the business to where it is today. I was delighted to be recognised by the Worshipful Company of Blacksmiths, who awarded me a Bronze medal and gave the title of Master Blacksmith in 2012.

PP: What advice would you give to other small businesses and those thinking of taking the plunge and creating a start-up?

AH: Be brave and dive in, but don’t bite off more than you can chew. Take things slowly and keep a tight rein on the finances. The online side of things is a minefield and can be very expensive – however it is crucial to most businesses these days so take the time to find the right sort of support at the right price. Make sure you take advantage of any free help you can get from technically minded friends and colleagues!

PP: When did you start working with PayPal Here?

AH: We started working with PayPal Here last November, when we exhibited at the Exeter Christmas Market. We have a periodic need for mobile card processing at craft fairs and markets but do not need it every day. That’s why PayPal Here works so well for us, it gives us the flexibility we need as there are no monthly fees.

PP: Has PayPal Here helped your business?

AH: Previously we had to take cash or use an old fashioned slider at craft fairs, which is not practical, especially as many of ASH Ironworks products are higher priced items. Potential customers would change their mind whilst on the hunt for a cash point, so we’d miss out on sales. PayPal Here is very convenient as it just connects to my iPad or iPhone and allows me to take payments anywhere, any time.
